Will getting my dog's haircut short keep him cool?

Writer's picture: Sarah MaberleySarah Maberley

No. Dogs do not cool down the same as humans. Our skin perspires and the evaporation of the perspiration is what helps to keeps us cool. Dogs coats work as an insulator keeping the cold out and heat in during winter and in summer stops the heat getting in and helps your dog regulate his body temperature. Dogs sweat through their pads, hygiene area and the lungs, where panting allows for latent heat to be removed through evaporation. By keeping these areas trimmed will help to keep your dog cool. Shaving the coat will have no effect on these areas.
